There are several types of transportation available today;
cars, trucks, busses, trains, planes, and bicycles. In the near
future, the cost of fuel will probably change the way we travel
and commute.
In the US we have relied heavily on personal vehicles for much
or our transportation needs. We are a car culture. As the cost of
gasoline continues to increase, most of us will be forced to drive
less, change to alternative fuel vehicles or make more use of mass
transit systems. There are several types of alternative fuels.
These include diesel, ethanol, hydrogen, electricity and a few
others.
Many commuters have converted to utilizing mass transit such as
busses and trains. These systems are great and do save energy and
money, but there is limited availability in some areas. Densely
populated areas such as the east coast typically have a higher
concentration of mass transit options and other cities such as
Chicago have an extensive system. Unfortunately, many large cites
removed their train and trolley systems in the 1940s. In many
cities, these systems are being rebuilt, but it will take several
years before they can have a significant impact.
In the short term, most people will have to change to more
efficient or alternative fuel vehicles for commuting. There are
some choices available today, but there will be many more in the
next few years.
